Fun in the Sun in Saipan

One of the biggest perks of spending 6 weeks on an island is definitely the sun! While I was a little worried when I first arrived due to the sweltering heat, I have come to my senses and am really excited to enjoy the tropical weather. Also, before you scoff at me for saying it’s too hot, think about how fun it really is to sit outside in the hot sun in 90 degree weather. It’s not. If you disagree, take a moment to think about if the snow and ice have gotten to your head. Anyways, I digress…

I typically finish up my days around 4 pm and because the weather has cooled down it is perfect to get outside for a drink, walk, or just a lazy afternoon soaking up some nice weather. The sun actually sets pretty early, typically around 6 ish, but luckily it doesn’t get colder than 70s so there are plenty of places to watch the sunset and then hang around outside in the warm weather. One of my favorite places so far to hangout are actually some of the resorts on the island. There are two main resorts – Hyatt Regency and Crown Plaza – and many people who live on the island will stop by for drinks at the bars or to hangout at the beaches behind the hotels. They have been great places to meet up with people for a drink after work or to go and read a book with a cold drink while I look out at the ocean.

In addition to the resorts off the main road, there are areas with sun and sand all along the island as you can imagine. While you can’t do it in MN, here people really make anything a parking spot. If there is grass or gravel, they will park there and I LOVE it. If you see a spot with a good view you can just pull over, set up a chair or blanket, maybe even a grill and hangout for the rest of the day! Especially on a nice day there are people and families out everywhere just laying out and socializing as well as swimming. In addition to swimming there are lots of places for a nice walk on the island. Memorial Park is on the western side of the island and there is a nice path from here that goes by the marina and all the way to the port. If you climb up the hill you can get a beautiful view. Also along the western coast of the island along Beach Road, which is right along the water, there is a walking path that allows you to look out at the water and beaches. I haven’t walked the whole way but you can definitely get your steps in! Let me tell you, island life is pretty cool.
